Profiles in Prevention: The Honorable Carlos Uresti
State Senator Carlos Uresti
Texas State Senator
TexProtects Board Member
Why is this issue important to you?
I realize that as a State Senator I am in a position to make differences for our children whether it's through legislation, collaboration with others, or showing support for the many child advocacy organizations throughout our state. Not to do so would be neglectful on my part; we have both a legal and a moral obligation to our children.
What prompted you to get involved?
After the horrific death of 4-year-old Jovonie Ochoa in 2003, I knew I could make a difference with the help of my colleagues and partners. It was simply time to respond to the issue with a fierce vision and mission to stop child abuse.
How does your role as a state legislator impact child abuse prevention?
As a legislator, I am able to make direct changes in policy that assist in systematic changes in some of our state systems and state statutes that allow for our children to be better served and better protected.
How would you encourage others to make an impact?
Attend child advocacy events. Meet others at these events and plug in. Become a voice for our children.
