Profiles in Prevention: State Rep. John Zerwas
House Appropriations Chair John Zerwas
Texas State Representative, District 28 (Fort Bend County)
Chair of the House Appropriations Committee
Why is this issue important to you?
The same as it probably is for anybody – it’s something that absolutely pulls at your heartstrings and is one of the most heinous crime situations that society faces.
What prompted you to get involved?
Kids are among the most vulnerable if not the most vulnerable out there. Every child should have the opportunity to flourish in this world, and for them to fall victim to people that abuse them is one of the worst crimes that can be committed.
How does your role as a Texas State Legislator impact child abuse prevention?
The state has a large investment in Child Protective Services, and it’s very incumbent on us (legislators) to recognize what those needs are and to make sure that the financial resources are there to meet those needs.
How would you encourage others to make an impact?
There are many ways to be involved in this, whether it be in the public role or as an advocate, or perhaps participating in CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and those types of things. There’s a place for everybody, if not many places for everybody, where you can have your voice heard or your energy and resources can be used to benefit these kids.
