TexProtects Statement on Gov. Abbott Emergency CPS Declaration
Screen grab from The Texas Tribune
Austin, Texas — Today, in his State of the State address, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared fixes to Texas’ Child Protective Services system as the first emergency item of the 85th Texas Legislature. Following is a response from Madeline McClure, founding CEO of TexProtects, the Texas Association for the Protection of Children:
“I am ecstatic to hear Governor Abbott warn legislators ‘Do not underfund’ fixes to our child protection and foster care systems. This may be a tight budget session, but failure to heed his call to ‘Do it right’ will only result in worse budget woes – and damaged lives – down the line. Legislators especially must remember the real fix: properly funding prevention programs that keep kids out of CPS and foster care in the first place.”
TexProtects, The Texas Association for the Protection of Children, was created to tackle issues of Child Protective Services (CPS) reform, prevention and public awareness to bring a collective, organized voice representing the needs of children at risk of abuse and survivors of child abuse and neglect. The organization is autonomous, nonpartisan and nonpolitical, designed to educate decision makers, private funders and the public at large. To date, it is the only Texas organization that has a dedicated focus on the main issues of protection, prevention, and healing of abused and neglected children.
