Statement on state approval of emergency CPS salary and hiring increases
Dallas, Texas — Statement from Madeline McClure, founding CEO of TexProtects, the Texas Association for the Protection of Children, regarding today’s approval of emergency increases in Child Protective Services salaries and hiring:
“Finally, after almost two decades of advocacy, the efforts of child protection advocates have resulted in a substantive raise in caseworker salaries: $12,000 more per worker! This brings those brave souls taking on this difficult, dangerous and thankless job to a level competitive with comparable professions.
“Mark this day: Child Protective Services caseworker turnover will drop starting today. We will be able to retain more workers as well as attract a larger and more qualified pool of workers from which to hire. We are greatly encouraged that the state’s leadership understands that caseworker retention – including higher salaries – tops the list of needed fixes to Child Protective Services. It is one of the most critical pieces of the five-part formula for reducing caseworker turnover: The approval of additional workers will also help with managing caseloads and stress. The end result will be safer children and stronger families.”
